In this article, we will go over the legality of SARMs, Cardarine as well as MK 677. We will answer common questions like are SARMs legal, are they illegal, is MK 677 legal, etc.
We will cover these compounds in this order:
- MK 677
Keep in mind that the laws regarding these compounds are the same in every country in the world as of 2020. The only exception is Australia. We will go over the legality of SARMs in Australia later in the article.
We will also cover the laws regarding SARMs in Europe and the USA.
But first, let’s clear up the biggest confusion when it comes to these compounds. The “Research chemical” or “Not for human consumption” labels.
Research Chemicals label
SARMs, Cardarine and MK 677 are all sold under the labels “Research Chemical” or “Not for human consumption”. This is also the main reason why people aren’t sure if they are legal or illegal.
The reason that these compounds are being sold under the labels “Research Chemical” or “Not for human consumption” is because they are not FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved yet. In fact, every compound needs to be FDA approved to not need a label that says “Research Chemical”. Companies have to respect that and use these labels.
Basically, FDA approval means that a compound is completely researched and doesn’t need the label “Research chemical” or “Not for human consumption”. Once a compound has FDA approval it most likely won’t ever be illegal.
But the labels “Research chemical” and “Not for human consumption” have nothing to do with them being legal or illegal for people to buy and use.
Now let’s first go over SARMs and explain their legality.
Are SARMs legal
A lot of people aren’t exactly sure whether SARMs (Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators) are legal or illegal. Under the category of SARMs fall a lot of compounds like Ostarine, LGD-4033, RAD140 and more. So if SARMs are legal or illegal, that means the same for all of the compounds that are under the category of SARMs. At least that’s how it is, for now, we will talk more about the future legality of SARMs later in the article (some will probably be banned and some will be legal).
They are mostly marketed as a legal, safer version of Steroids. Although this is mostly true, there are some things you have to keep in mind when it comes to are they legal or not.
Let’s get to the point, SARMs are 100% legal to buy and use. You won’t have any problems purchasing or using them, they are absolutely legal to use. This is also one of the reasons why they are so popular, they are legal.
Check out this video if you want another explanation on the legality of SARMs. To save you some time, though, SARMs are legal to buy and use everywhere in the world as of now, with the exception of Australia (we will go over that later).
You have to know, however, that they are prohibited for use if you are a professional athlete. Let’s dive deeper into this.
where are SARMs illegal
However, SARMs are illegal and prohibited in professional sports. They are banned by almost all sports bodies because of the obvious unfair advantages that SARMs give. Don’t do SARMs if you are a competing athlete, some sports even test for them.
SARMs are listed as a prohibited substance for professional athletes by the USADA (the United States Anti Doping Agency) as well as WADA (World Anti Doping Agency). In fact, some famous athletes in sports such as cycling, MMA and CrossFit have tested positive in SARMs tests done by the USADA. On average, it takes about 10-14 days for a SARM to clear out of our body so that tests can’t detect it.
The future legality of SARMs
As we said, SARMs are currently legal to buy and use anywhere in the world other than Australia. Of course, this doesn’t apply to professional competing athletes.
Ostarine and LGD-4033, however, are considered as the safest and most researched SARMs. They are successfully going through clinical trials as of right now and in the next few years, they will almost definitely we FDA approved. One thing is for sure though, Ostarine and LGD-4033 will never be illegal because they are so researched and safe.
The rest of the SARMs – S4 and RAD140 will most likely stay legal but they won’t be FDA approved as fast as Ostarine and LGD-4033. Most likely they will become FDA approved but that will take a while because they are still in the beginning phases of research and clinical trials.
So to summarize, certain SARMs like S23 and YK11 will maybe get banned in the next few years. Ostarine and LGD-4033 will very likely become FDA approved in the next few years. They will definitely stay legal. The rest, RAD140 and S4 will stay legal but won’t get FDA approved anytime soon (unlike Ostarine and LGD-4033).
Is Cardarine legal
A lot of people mistake Cardarine, also called GW 50156, for a SARM but in reality, it’s not a SARM at all, it’s a PPARδ receptor agonist. In this article, we will only focus on the legality of this compound if you want to read more about GW 50156, read our in-depth Cardarine guide.
Cardarine is 100% legal to buy and use anywhere in the world. It’s sold under the label “Research Chemical” or “Not for human consumption”. We talked about this at the beginning of the article. The important thing is, you are able to legally buy and use Cardarine.
When is Cardarine illegal
Cardarine, just like SARMs, is illegal to use in competitive sports. It’s a prohibited substance by almost all sports organizations because of the enormous endurance advantage that it gives. GW 50156 is listed as a prohibited substance in professional sports by the USADA (the United States Anti Doping Agency).
An interesting this is, it’s extremely hard to test somebody for Cardarine dosage. In fact, Lance Armstrong was using Cardarine (along with some other compounds) to help him secure 10 Tour de France victories. He was actually never caught doping, he admitted to it in an Oprah interview.
From that, you can obviously see, why Cardarine is illegal in professional sports.
Is MK 677 legal
Similar to Cardarine, MK 677 is not a SARM either. A lot of people mistake it for a SARM but it’s actually a growth hormone secretagogue.
If you want to get more information about this compound, read our in-depth MK 677 guide.
Let’s get to the point, MK 677 is 100% legal to buy and use anywhere in the world. Like SARMs and Cardarine, it’s sold under the label “Research Chemical” or “Not for human consumption”. But we already talked about this at the beginning of the article. The point is, MK 677 is legal to buy and use, you won’t have any problems with it.
When is MK 677 illegal
Remember, MK 677 is, like SARMs and Cardarine, illegal in competitive sports because of the unfair advantages that it provides. Increased strength, reduced recovery time, etc. It’s banned by most organizations.
An interesting thing about MK 677 is that it’s very hard for sports organizations to test for it. Still, you shouldn’t use it if you are a competing athlete. Still, it’s listed as a banned substance by the USADA (the United States Anti Doping Agency) for professional athletes.
An interesting fact about MK 677 is that it was used by Lance Armstrong to help him win 10 Tour de France victories. He also used Cardarine and a lot of other compounds as well.
The future MK 677/Cardarine legality
We have covered the future legality of SARMs, now let’s do the same for MK 677 (Ibutamoren) and Cardarine (GW 50156).
MK 677 is a very research compound that is backed by a lot of studies as well as human studies. Much like Ostarine and LGD-4033 (we mentioned these in the SARMs section previously in the article), MK 677 is also going through clinical trials right now.
This means that MK 677 will definitely stay legal forever.
Cardarine is not FDA approved. It will most likely never get FDA approved because of the study in 2008 that was the reason for the discontinuation of this compound. You can read more about this in our article where we answer the question “is Cardarine safe“.
So basically, Cardarine will stay legal to buy and use but it won’t get FDA approved and because of that it will be sold with the label “Research chemical” or “Not for human consumption”.
The legality of SARMs in Australia
In Australia, unlike the rest of the world, SARMs are considered illegal to use without a doctor’s prescription.
Still, a lot of major fitness influencers OPENLY use SARMs on social media without getting into trouble. This is because even though SARMs are technically illegal to use in Australia (without a doctor’s prescription), you almost certainly won’t get in trouble for it. Nobody will ask you, hey, do you do SARMs and do you have a doctor’s prescription.
You can read more about this in our article on the legality of SARMs in Australia.
Are SARMs Legal in Europe
Right now, SARMs are legal in every country in Europe. In fact, a lot of European companies even sell SARMs. So to summarize, SARMs are legal to buy and use in every country in Europe.
There are no signs of a future ban/government regulation over SARMs in Europe.
Are SARMs legal in the US
Currently, SARMs are legal to buy and use in every state in the US (United States). This is also the reason for their popularity. A lot of American fitness influencers even openly use SARMs.
There is talk about a future ban on SARMs in the US but that only includes S23 and YK11. Other SARMs will definitely stay legal to buy and use because of how useful they are to treat certain diseases. But for now and for the next few years, every SARM is legal to buy and use in the US.
In conclusion, SARMs and other compounds like Cardarine, MK 677, etc. are legal. Some countries prohibit SARMs and allow them only for “research purposes”. Some countries are starting to talk about the ban on SARMs, but we still have a few years before that could happen.
In the future, some SARMs will most likely become prohibited (S23, YK11), some will become FDA approved (Ostarine, LGD-4033) and some will stay legal but without FDA approval (S4, RAD140). MK 677 will also become FDA approved, Cardarine, however, won’t get the approval but it will stay legal.
So to summarize, every mentioned compound is legal to buy and use everywhere in the world and will stay legal in the future with the exception of S23 and YK11. The only country where this isn’t true is Australia. There, SARMs are illegal without a doctor’s prescription but still, a lot of people use them openly and don’t have any problems, so you don’t have to worry.
Also, remember, don’t use SARMs if you are a professional athlete, most sports organizations list SARMs as banned substances because they provide unfair advantages.
